UMCEC 2021 : Geo-Challenge

Rules & Regulations

1. Eligibility

a) University of Malaya Civil Engineering Competition 2021: Geo-Challenge is opened to all polytechnics and undergraduate students of higher learning institutions in Malaysia.

b) A team of participants must consist minimum of four (4) and a maximum of five (5) students in polytechnics and universities.

c) A student must not be a member of more than one team.

d) Each team may be accompanied with one (1) supervising advisor.

e) The advisor is allowed to attend the team meeting during the competition day.

f) All members of a given team are must be from the same institution.

g) First come first serve basis, first 20 teams are selected.


2. Registration Rules

a) Participants can register through Google Form given.

b) Registration date: 1 March 2021 – 25 April 2021

c) Registration fees: RM 50

d) Registration fee is not refundable.

3. Competition Day

a) Participant must be ready 30 minutes in advance and enter the Microsoft Teams meeting 15 minutes before the competition start.

b) Attires of the participants must be neat and tidy.

c) Participants must mute their microphone and off their camera throughout the meeting and unless is their turn to present.

d) Participants must make sure the microphone and camera are working before entering the meeting.

e) Every participant must be visible during presentation.

f) Any delay or disruption due to the internet connection must be informed earlier to the Person in Charge.


4. Procedure

· Competition is judged by two part which is Proposal and Presentation.

· Proposal is a technical report to describe their designed solution.

· Participants are required to do a Presentation to evaluate participants soft skills during competition day (5 June 2021).

· Participants are required to prepare a Poster and a Video Introduction to own a chance to win Best Poster and Best Popularity Award.


a. Proposal

a) Proposal must be submitted 1 week before the competition. (29 May 2021)

b) Proposal must be submitted through Google Form.

c) Any graphical item is allowed.

d) Number of pages should not exceed 20 pages (excluding cover page, executive summary, table of content, references, appendices and group photo).

e) Any late submission of proposal will not be accepted.

f) Font : Times New Roman, Size : 12, Spacing : 1.5


b. Presentation

a) The presentation should also include new and innovative ways in preventing slope failure to the building and construction field in Malaysia.

b) Creativity and innovation of the presentation are highly encouraged.

c) Visual aid is compulsory during the presentation.

· The aim of the visual aid is to provide a clearly picture of the idea presented.

· Visual aid can only be in the form of PowerPoint.

d) The length of presentation should not exceed 5 minutes long.

e) A Q&A session by the panel of judges will be held for each team after the oral presentation.

f) The maximum duration of Q&A session is 5 minutes.

g) Recorded video presentation is prohibited.


c. Poster

a) Participants are required to design a poster with A3 size (Portrait) including their design solution.

b) Poster designed are required to be uploaded to UMCEC 2021 via Google Form 1 week before competition (29 May 2021).

d. Video Introduction

a) Participants are required to upload a video to UMCEC 2021 via Google Form before 3 May 2021.

b) The video content:

· Self-introduction

· Group name

· Name of university / polytechnic

· Must mention “University of Malaya Civil Engineering Competition 2021

· Duration: Minimum – 1 minute, Maximum – 2 minutes

· All participants must be visible in their video.

c) Video will be uploaded via UMCEC Facebook page.

d) Every participant MUST add UMCEC’s Facebook profile frame to their Facebook profile picture one month before competition day to be qualified for BEST POPULARITY AWARD.

e) Number of “LIKE” will only be admitted once every member of the team had changed their Facebook profile frame.

f) Number of “LIKE” will be counted 1 day before competition day.

g) Best Popularity Award will be awarded to group which having the highest “LIKE” for their video.

h) Starting from 12 April 2021, the video submission is opened for the participants via Google Form.

i) All the videos will be posted on 5 May 2021.


5. Software

I) List of software suggested in aid of technical analyzation:

  • AutoCAD - Student Version

b) Cost and Material Analysis:

  • Estimator 2.0

  • STACK

c) Geo-related:

  • MIDAS

  • RocFall

  • D-Stability

  • Geo5

  • Plaxis 2D

II) Participants are allowed to analysis and calculate manually.

6. Judgement Criteria

A. Proposal – 70 %

1. Innovativeness, Creativity, and Originality of idea- 10%

i. Originality -5%

ii. Creativity - 5%


2. Practicality - 35%

a. Analysis of data - 10%

i. Calculation

b. Market value

i. Cost - 5%

ii. Aesthetic - 5%

c. Sustainability

i. Environment - 5%

ii. Project - 5%

d. Constraints and limitations (budget…) - 5%


3. Effectiveness -25%

i. Failure factors of Highland Tower - 5%

ii. Solution- 15%

iii. Road safety- 5%

B. Presentation – 30%

a. The presentation should also include new and innovative ways in prevention slope failure happening to the building and construction field in Malaysia.

b. Creativity and innovation of the presentation are highly encouraged.

c. Visual aid is compulsory during the presentation.

· The aim of the visual aid is to provide a clearly picture of the idea presented.

· Visual aid can be in the form of PowerPoint.

d. The length of presentation shall not exceed 5 minutes long.

e. A Q&A session by the panel of judges will be held for each team after the oral presentation.

f. The maximum duration of Q&A session is 5 minutes.

7. Declaration

a) The organizing committee reserves the right to amend the rules and regulations of University of Malaya Civil Engineering Competition: Geo-Challenge without prior notice.

b) Further details or changes about the competition will be notified to the participants.

c) Any violation of rules and regulations may be subjected to marks deduction.

d) The decisions made by judges are final.
